13” Alocasia ‘Hilo Beauty

Stingrays are twisted! Unlike the more commonly available Alocasia Macrorrhiza varieties, these deviant little cousins have very odd shaped leaves. While their leaves are not as large as those of the more common varieties, well-grown specimens are known to show off impressive sets of leaves. Like all Alocasias, Stingrays are easy to care plants that are sure to turn heads. If you have a bright nook or a well-lit window-side with indirect sun, a Stingray can become its centrepiece.

Alocasia Hilo Beauty

Alocasias are tropical plants collected for their vibrant and colorful, strikingly patterned leaves. Because they’re so easy-going, Alocasias are perfectly suited for a modern living room or office, dim bedroom, or cozy study. If you can protect them from the sun, these easy to multiply unfussy plants can be your companions for years.

Adopting and caring for Alocasia Hilo Beauty

AdoptingHilo Beauty are not for everyone, their unusual leaf shapes and quirky form means that they are not seen in everyone’s garden. However, if you are looking for an unusual species that can make heads turn Hilo Beauty are it. These easy to grow, low maintenance plants work for collectors and for homes looking to fill out with lush foilage.
Locating: Strong, direct sunlight can bleach, even burn the leaves of a Alocasia, so it is better to have them in shaded, lower light areas. If you are growing them indoors, or on a well shaded balcony we recommend that you move the plant around to a spot that has better light once every few weeks.
Potting: Since these plants are natives of the tropics they need porous, well-drained soils. They do well in a 30:30:30:10 mix of coco-peat, compost, coarse sand and Perlite.
Watering: Alocasias do well in soils that are not too overly moist. It’s a good idea to hold off watering them until the top layer of soil is dry to touch. Droopy leaves are a sign that the potting mixture is parched and the plant needs to be watered.
Fertilising: If your potting mix is right, these plants will not require too much fertiliser. However, nourishing them with an organic liquid fertiliser two or three times a year will help them do well. If you are using a chemical mix, ensure that they don’t touch the stalk or its leaves. This could damage the plant.
Alocasias hibernate. So if a Stingray goes under in winter be patient with the plant and stop watering the pot. Come spring and they sprout up, right back!
