A tropical foliage species, Begonias are easy to care plants that can be grown by beginners and also be collected by experts. While some Begonias are grown for their stunning flowers, others are loved for their eye-catching foliage. Classified under five broad types; Rex Begonias, Wax Begonias, Rhizomatous Begonia, Cane Begonias and Shrub Begonias, these plants do well across a wide variety of temperatures and climatic conditions.

Adopting and caring for Begonia Metallica

Locating: Strong, direct sun can damage the leaves of a Begonia so it is best to locate them in an area where they can receive many hours of filtered, indirect light

Potting: Being tropical plants, Begonias need rich, well-drained soil that has been fortified with organic material. So it is ideal to mix good quantities of compost into the potting mix. A blend of cocopeat, compost and river sand in a 30:40:30 ratio should help your Begonia to do well.

Watering: Begonias like regular watering, especially if they are growing in pots, even though they can’t stand waterlogged conditions. So ensuring a good, well-draining potting mixture is a good idea to keep your plant happy

Fertilising: If you have a good potting mixture and the plants are looking bushy and healthy, you can skip the fertilising entirely. However, if you are keen to feed them, use an organic liquid fertiliser. If you are using a chemical mix, dilute them to have the prescribed strength and fertilise them once a month. Do ensure that the chemicals don’t come in contact with the leaves.
